Marwugarra – Pandanas and Margudidi Nuts – 2021
Paintings – Acrylic on Canvas – 40 x 40 cm (pre-stretched)
Marwugarra – Pandanas are highly sought after by women of the Gulf Country.
Yanyuwa, Mara, Garrwa and Gudanji all gather from this plant after the wet season for weaving when the leaves are supple and won’t easily split and break.
The seed pods are also highly prized – they are split open and the seeds gathered and often roasted over the fire. They are highly nutritious and taste like walnuts.
Marwugarra is the Yanyuwa name given to Pandanas and the nuts are referred to as Margudidi.
