Kiwarrarramba (Kangaroo) Hunting in Garrwa Lands – 2021
Paintings – Acrylic on Canvas – 61 x 61 cm
Garrwa people have lived in this country for thousands of years. They are known as freshwater or mainland people and are expert hunters of mainland animals. Kiwarrarramba and other types of kangaroo are a favorite as they provide a substantial meal for an entire family group.
In the old days spears and boomerangs were the main hunting weapons, today hunting happens with rifles and bush knives, but tracking the kangaroo in the bush is still exactly the same as it has been since the old days.
Garrwa people still cook kangaroo the same way as the old days – over an open fire outside in the evening or sometimes buried in the ground (earth oven).
